Naturopathic medicine is based on the principle “the healing power of nature” which means the ability of the body to heal itself.
Even before the days of Hippocrates who used hydrotherapy, massage, diet and herbs to heal his patients, people had been for centuries using natural means such as food, plants, water, diet and exercise to heal themselves.
Today, naturopaths blend these time honored therapies with modern medicine using diagnostic lab work and various testing methods to determine a diagnosis. Natural treatments are then implemented to bring the body back to a state of balance.
Naturopaths are trained as general practitioners with an emphasis on preventative and natural medicine. All ND’s are licensed in the state of CT and have passed a National board exam.
In the late 1800s Benedict Lust, who is known as the father of naturopathic medicine came to this country to teach the principles of hydrotherapy. At that same time other professions were forming such as herbal medicine, chiropractic, and homeopathy.
Lust learned about these other modalities and combined them to create naturopathic medicine.
This is why our profession is so eclectic. All these principles are still taught in naturopathic schools to this day.
